Idea
Introduction
Biohm is a multi-award-winning bio-technology company that is revolutionising construction through nature-inspired innovation. Placing biological systems at the heart of our inspiration (biomimicry), we harness the philosophies of the Circular Economy to create a step-change in building technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods.
We aim to create a healthy and regenerative built environment through our bio-based materials, circular construction system, Triagomy, and our range of consultation services to industry. By utilising readily available organic and synthetic by-products and ‘waste’ materials from industry we bio-manufacture low-cost, high-performing, and carbon-negative alternatives to unhealthy and environmentally damaging building materials.
We are now scaling our technologies to meet demand and fulfil major projects. However, we realise that we can't revolutionise an entire industry alone. Alongside our leading industrial, academic and public network, we need you!
Substantial accomplishments to date
Our carbon-negative bio-based materials include building insulation made out of mycelium (the root structure of mushrooms) and Orb (Organic Refuse biocompound), a 100% natural sheet material made out of food and agricultural surplus.
They are out-performing leading synthetic and carbon-heavy alternatives and will be combined to form our construction system, Triagomy (patent filed, published or granted in almost 60 countries).
Biohm continues to gather awards & recognition from government, industry and academia. In collaboration with the Onion Collective, we recently won the Waitrose and Partners Plan Plastic Prize: The Million Pound Challenge and a Power to Change grant - totalling almost £600,000 - to further develop our plastic-consuming mycelium strains and build what we believe to be the world’s first community-led bio-manufacturing facility.
Organisations and governments from across Europe, North Africa, the US, and South Asia have extended invitations and offered support for Biohm to set up our revolutionary facilities. We are a member of the internationally recognised Ellen MacArthur Foundation, part of the Unreasonable Group's 2020 cohort. Amongst other shortlists and awards, Biohm has been shortlisted as one of the UN's Young Champions of the Earth.
We have been profiled by internationally recognised print and television news companies that have championed both our passion for innovative materials and our socially, economically and environmentally restorative business model.
Monetisation strategy
Mycelium Insulation | Our first UK facility is scheduled to begin production in Q4 2020 - ramping up to produce up to 9,000 sqm of insulation p/m. With superior performance, price competitiveness and environmental/social impact, we expect our market share to steadily grow.
Orb | We have developed what we understand to be unique 100% natural, biodegradable and renewable binder, allowing us to make sheet materials out of food and agricultural waste that meet increasing demand for healthy and regenerative alternatives in construction.
Carbon Crediting Waste Management | As 'waste' is a primary input for our products we intend to offer waste management services supplementing production costs and offering genuine carbon credits.
Services | We offer a range of design, consultancy and material development services to support the industry's transition.
Construction Systems | As our materials develop over the next 2-3 years, we aim to launch our first of many nature-inspired constructon systems and lead property development projects.
